Common Ant Species Found in Albany Homes

Not all ants respond to the same treatment. Identifying the species is the first step toward a solution that actually works. Three species account for most of the ant problems we see across the Albany area.

Carpenter Ants

Carpenter ants are among the largest ant species in New York, typically measuring up to 5/8 of an inch and appearing black, red, or brown. They don’t eat wood. They excavate tunnels and chambers inside moist or decaying wood to nest. Sawdust-like material called frass near window frames, door frames, or wooden beams is a reliable sign of an active nest. Carpenter ants forage at night, so you may hear faint rustling inside walls after dark before you ever see one.

Pavement Ants

Pavement ants are small, dark brown ants that nest beneath slabs, sidewalks, and foundations. They enter homes through cracks in concrete and tend to turn up in kitchens and along baseboards. They’re persistent and can establish large colonies under a foundation before most homeowners notice them.

Odorous House Ants

Odorous house ants get their name from the rotten-coconut smell they emit when crushed. They nest in wall voids and beneath flooring, often near moisture sources, and forage aggressively for sweets and proteins. Colonies can grow quickly, which is why early identification matters.

Signs You Have an Ant Infestation

Ant colonies are often well established by the time property owners notice them. These are the signs worth acting on quickly.

• Visible ant trails: A consistent line of ants moving between a food or water source and a wall, cabinet, or exterior gap points to an established colony nearby.
• Frass near wood: Piles of fine, sawdust-like material near wooden structures, frames, or trim are a strong indicator of carpenter ant nesting activity.
• Winged ants indoors: Swarmers emerging inside your home in spring or early summer mean a mature colony is looking to expand. It’s a sign the infestation is already well developed.
• Sounds in the walls: Faint rustling or tapping inside wall voids at night can indicate carpenter ants tunneling through wood.

Carpenter ant damage can grow with the colony. The longer tunneling continues unchecked, the more structural impact it can have on wooden framing and supports. Early action can help limit that risk.
